Songs for Humanity and Democracy
To ensure a life of dignity, we need mutual respect and the shared protection of our environment. Individual freedom is inseparably linked to a healthy environment. Yet today, both a healthy planet and our democracy are under threat. Our shared struggle against fascism and for climate protection has always been accompanied by songs.
Back then—more than fifty years ago—we worried about dying forests (acid rain) and the dangers posed by nuclear power plants. We had songs for these causes, at first the English ones by Pete Seeger, but soon also our own. There were many leading voices like Walter Mossmann, Frank Baier, and others. And we all sang along. The collective singing of these powerful songs gave us strength to resist and courage to fight.
Today, with our "Songs for Humanity and Democracy," we aim to inspire a more conscious and deeper understanding of song as a tool in the fight against climate change and war—songs that speak to the singer themselves. "They should recognize themselves in the songs—with their problems, their fears, their joys. And with pleasure, for singing brings sensual well-being."
(Hein and Oss Kröher, These Are Our Songs, Büchergilde Gutenberg 1977)
So we sing and perform this program across generations: the poetic songwriter Manfred Maurenbrecher, the seasoned folk group Schnappsack (who doesn't know their "Raven Song"?), the young Düsseldorf band La Kejoca, making waves with their modern global folk sound, and the young Leipzig singer-songwriter Paula Linke, who has earned her place among the new wave of female songwriters.

Bach concerts
At the centre is the famous 'Stabat Mater' by Pergolesi, which enjoyed such great popularity during Johann Sebastian Bach's lifetime that he made an arrangement as the psalm cantata 'Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden' BWV 1083, which is still very rarely performed today
The concert opens with the bass solo cantata 'Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen' sung by Keno Brandt and concludes with the popular Bach motet 'Jesu meine Freude', performed by a soloist.
The string ensemble will perform on historical instruments from Bach's time.

Messiah
The work is one of the most important oratorios of the Baroque era - especially as the Hallelujah is probably one of the best-known pieces of music - and impresses with its powerful musical and dramatic depiction of the Christian story of salvation.
The popular masterpiece, as exciting as a concert opera for the church, already had prominent admirers in Handel's day: the English music writer Charles Burney, for example, described Messiah as a work that 'feeds the hungry, clothes the naked and raises the fatherless'. Beethoven enthused: 'Handel is the unrivalled master of all masters! Go and learn to produce something so great with such simple means!'
